Question Banks and Assessments
Overviewβ
In e-learning courses, assessments are categorized as:
- Knowledge Check: Short, formative quizzes at the end of a topic to check understanding.
- Assessment: Summative quizzes at the end of a module or course, testing understanding under stringent conditions, often resulting in a pass or fail.
This guide focuses on Assessments and provides instructions for configuring and using them in MAXRES Construct. For information on Knowledge Checks, refer to the respective guide.

- Configure blocks and question banks for assessments.
- Use the Trickle extension to manage assessment flow.
- Define question behavior, scoring, and feedback settings.

Processβ
1. Setting an Article as an Assessmentβ
1.1. Enable the Assessment Extensionβ
- Navigate to the Course Structure page.
- Select Manage Extensions from the left options pane.
- Ensure the Assessment extension is enabled. If not, click Add to enable it.
1.2. Configure the Articleβ
- Open the Page where the assessment will be created.
- Click the Cog icon on the Article element and select Edit.
- Navigate to the Extensions section or toggle the Extensions option in the left pane.
- Enable the Assessment extension and configure the settings as follows:
1.3. Assessment Settingsβ
- Assessment Name: Provide a unique name for the assessment (used to track and display results).
- Attempts Allowed: Specify the number of attempts a learner can make (use -1 or 0 for unlimited attempts).
- Percentage Based: Toggle to use a percentage or raw score for the pass mark.
- Pass Mark: Set the minimum score required to pass.
- Include Total Score: Enable this to send scores to the LMS.
- Assessment Weight: Assign a weight if there are multiple assessments.
- Suppress Marking: Delay marking until the assessment is completed or all attempts are used.
- Reset on Revisit: Specify whether the assessment resets when revisited.
- Allow Retry Once Passed: Enable this to allow retries after passing (if attempts remain).
- Randomize Blocks: Enable random order for blocks and set the Block Count to display a specific number of blocks (use -1 or 0 for all blocks).
1.4. Question Banksβ
- Enabled: Group blocks into question banks.
- Split: Define how many questions to pull from each bank (e.g., "3,2" for 3 questions from Bank 1 and 2 from Bank 2).
- Randomize Question Banks: Randomize question order within the banks.
2. Configuring a Block for an Assessmentβ
2.1. Block Settingsβ
- Click the Cog icon on the block you want to configure and select Edit.
- Scroll to the Extensions section or toggle the Extensions option.
- Expand the Assessment extension and assign the block to the appropriate question bank.
3. Configuring the Trickle Extension for Assessmentsβ
The Trickle extension ensures linear content progression, ideal for assessments.
3.1. Enable the Trickle Extensionβ
- Go to Course Structure or Page Structure and select Manage Extensions.
- Enable the Trickle extension.
3.2. Trickle Settingsβ
- Open the Article containing the assessment.
- Navigate to the Extensions section or toggle the Extensions option and expand Trickle.
Trickle Optionsβ
- Enable Trickle: Activate Trickle for the article.
- Scroll Automatically: Automatically scroll to the next block.
- Scroll Duration: Set the scroll speed in milliseconds.
- Enable on Child Blocks: Disable for assessments.
- Scroll To: Define how Trickle advances (e.g., @block +1).
Button Attributesβ
- Enabled: Enable custom button attributes.
- Initial Visibility: Set button visibility before completion (default: Hidden).
- Final Visibility: Set button visibility after completion (default: Hidden).
- Full Width: Enable full-width buttons.
- Hide on Scroll: Disable for screen reader compatibility.
- Button Text: Define button text (default: Continue).
Step Lockingβ
- Enabled: Prevent advancement until the block is interacted with.
- Completion Required: Ensure all block components are completed before the Trickle button appears.
4. Types of Assessment Componentsβ
All Question Components can be used in assessments, including:
- Multiple-choice questions
- Fill-in-the-blank questions
- Drag-and-drop interactions
Example Structure for an Assessment:β
- Article 1: Contains question blocks.
- Article 2: Includes blocks explaining the scoring system and an Assessment Results Component to display results.
5. Knowledge Checksβ
Knowledge Checks are formative assessments that can be added anywhere within a page. They donβt contribute to pass/fail outcomes but can be required for progression.
By following these steps, you can configure and manage assessments effectively within MAXRES Construct, enhancing learner engagement and evaluation accuracy.
